Mommy Chic rages in Hollywood, Britney Spears is holding up the inglorious counter-tradition of... her... questionable Hollywood parenting.
First she was snapped by the paparazzi holding her baby on her lap while she drove, and last month she had to face the wrath of the judge adjudicating her custody dispute with ex-hubby Kevin Federline who ruled, "Based on the evidence presented, the Court finds that there is a habitual, frequent, and continuous use of controlled substances by Petitioner Spears". Spears was ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testing, and to get a parenting coach. This week, per the judge's ruling, Spears lost physical custody of her kids to her ex, Federline, until further notice.

Jackson, who was acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005, has two other children, Prince Michael Jackson II and Paris Katherine Jackson.
Alec Baldwin
The "30 Rock" star shocked the public when he left a profane, vitriolic voice mail for his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a "rude, thoughtless little pig" for missing a scheduled phone call with him. "I don't care that you're 12 or 11 or whatever", he railed, "I'm a good father, and you're a pig". He later apologized on "The View".
Joan Crawford
The Oscar-winning star of "Mildred Pierce" came to define bad Hollywood parenting when her adopted daughter, Christina, published her bestselling book "Mommie Dearest", in which she detailed her mother's physical and emotional abuse.
According to the younger Crawford, Crawford once tried to strangle her: "I lost my footing and fell into the floor, hitting my head on the ice chest as I went down. She banged my head on the floor, tightening her grip around my throat.... Her eyes were the eyes of a killer animal, glistening with excitement. I gasped for air and felt myself sinking into unconsciousness.... All I could think of was that my own mother was trying to kill me".
Woody Allen
During her custody battle with the Manhattan auteur, actress and former girlfriend Mia Farrow alleged that Allen sexually molested their 7-year-old adopted daughter Malone, a charge that the presiding judge later concluded was inconclusive. This said, the judge declared Allen's relationship with Farrow's then-22-year-old adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn "inappropriate". (The Farrow-Allen relationship had fallen apart when Farrow discovered naked photos Allen had taken of the young woman).
Farrow ultimately won the custody battle, and the judge in the case deemed Allen "self-absorbed, untrustworthy and insensitive" and wrote that the filmmaker "demonstrated no parenting skills that would qualify him as an adequate custodian".
Still, the three-time Academy Award winner remained unrepentant about the incident with Soon-Yi, whom he later married, telling
Vanity Fair in 2002, that Farrow finding the incriminating photographs was "just one of the fortuitous events, one of the great pieces of luck in my life.... It was a turning point for the better".
Ryan O'Neal
Last February, the 66-year old "Love Story" star was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon for discharging a gun during a fight with his 42-year-old son, Griffin. Charges were later dropped after prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence, and O'Neal told this newspaper that he fired the weapon in an attempt to scare off his son who was swinging a fireplace poker at him.
Griffin's sister, Tatum, later weighed in on "Entertainment Tonight", "No matter what my dad is saying in the press, Griffin was not trying to start a fight with him. He was attempting to protect Redmond [Ryan's son with actress Farrah Fawcett]".
This was the second publicized altercation between father and son -- in 1984, Griffin O'Neal told People magazine how his own drug-addled behavior had provoked Ryan O'Neal to slug him in the mouth, knocking out two front teeth.
In her book, "A Paper Life", Oscar-winner Tatum O'Neal also alleged physical and emotional abuse by her dad. Ryan O'Neal has denied his daughter's claims. (Tatum O'Neal also had her own battle with drugs, and in 1998, her 7-year-old daughter found a syringe in the apartment. Afterward, Tatum O'Neal lost custody of her kids to her ex-husband John McEnroe).
Courtney Love
The Hole frontwoman and actress has lost custody of her daughter with Kurt Cobain, not once but twice. The first time came just weeks after Frances Bean's birth in 1992, sparked by allegations run in
Vanity Fair, that Love had admitted using heroin during her pregnancy. Love has said that she didn't know she was pregnant at the time. After an investigation by child protective authorities, the baby was returned to Love.
In 2003, Love was rushed to the hospital after she overdosed on painkillers, and eight days later, Bean -- who was in the house when her mom OD'd, was removed again by child services and placed with Cobain's mother, Wendy O'Connor. Love got Frances Bean back in 2005 after completing state-mandated rehab.
How is Federline as a father ?

K-Fed is now K-Dad full-time after a judge ordered Britney Spears to temporarily surrender custody of the couple's sons — Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1 — to Federline.
The one-time rapper's custodial gains may have more to do with Spears' decline than his own parenting skills. The 25-year-old pop star failed to produce a California driver's license and allegedly missed a drug and alcohol test as ordered by the court, her lawyer, Sorrell Trope, said Tuesday.
How well the kids will fare with Federline remains to be seen.
The 29-year-old father of four left his girlfriend, Shar Jackson, just months after she gave birth to their son, Kaleb. (Federline and Jackson also have a 5-year-old daughter, Kori).
Federline first met Spears in passing in 1999 when he was a backup dancer for a boy band. The pair married in October 2004, quickly had two children and split just after their second son was born. (Spears filed for divorce last November and it became official in July).
That track record aside, Dorian Traube, a professor of social work at the University of Southern California, said: "Lately, he's really kind of stepped up as a father. We don't hear much about how he parents his other kids. But with his children with Britney, he's gone to great lengths to keep them out of the public eye and he's gone to great lengths to keep the grandparents involved".
A hearing was scheduled Wednesday for more custody proceedings between Spears and Federline.
While Spears made her now infamous appearance on the
MTV Video Music Awards, Federline hosted a birthday party for the couple's two boys. Spears bounces between houses and high-priced hotels, while Federline keeps a home in the family-oriented suburban community of Tarzana, California.
"He recently put a safety fence around his pool", said Traube, who has followed the couple's ups and downs closely through news reports. "He is genuinely worried about the welfare of his children and what they might be experiencing when they're with their mother".
It's a change from a year ago, when Federline was a party-circuit regular preparing to release his debut album. Even then, though, he talked about waking up with his children, tucking them in at night and building a home studio so he could stay close to them.
"I would just work out of my house the whole time and I could spend as much time as I needed to spend with my children", Federline told
The Associated Press in October 2006. "But it's still never enough".
Spears has been spiraling downward since she and Federline split. She was photographed without underwear and appeared to be drunk and out-of-control. Then she shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and ended up spending a month in rehab.
Monday night, after learning she would lose custody of her kids indefinitely, Spears showed up for a stay at a posh
Beverly Hills hotel.
"Hopefully this will be the impetus for some positive change for Britney, and then for the kids as a result", Albright said. "It's really unfortunate because the kids are the ultimate victims".

Federline appears at custody hearing
LOS ANGELES - Kevin Federline appeared in family law court Wednesday for a hearing following a decision earlier this week that temporarily gave him custody of his two sons with Britney Spears.
Spears, 25, was not present when Federline, 29, stood and was sworn in by a court clerk. The hearing before Commissioner Scott M. Gordan began behind closed doors. Attorneys for both sides were present.
Flanked by bodyguards, Federline arrived in a blue suit and wearing a black patch over his right eye, covered by a pair of sunglasses. He spoke with his lawyers before the hearing got under way.
Spears and Federline previously had shared custody of the boys.
But Monday's court order for Spears to temporarily surrender 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James to Federline came after the pop star failed to produce a California driver's license and allegedly missed a drug and alcohol test as ordered by the court, her lawyer, Sorrell Trope, told
People magazine.
A temporary driver's license was issued to Spears late Tuesday in Santa Monica, California Department of Motor Vehicles spokesman Mike Marando said Wednesday.
"She has completed her requirements for a driver's license", he said.
Among her recent problems, Spears was charged with misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run and driving without a valid license for allegedly crashing into a parked car in August.
Spears and Federline were married in October 2004. She filed for divorce last November and it became official in July.
Gordon previously ordered Spears to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week after the court found she engages in "habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol".
He also previously ordered Spears to meet weekly with a "parenting coach" who was to report back to the court about her skills. Both Spears and Federline must complete the court's "Parenting Without Conflict" class.
